If you’re looking for a creamy and delicious pie then look no further than this Butterscotch Custard Pie. The filling in this pie will have you eyeing another piece before you even finish your first one.
What I love about this pie is that it’s seriously good. I know that a lot of pies can claim this, but I’m not joking when I say that this one takes the “cake” – or pie. If you’re looking for easy pie recipes, I can’t recommend this one highly enough.
And I think that after you make it and try it, you’re going to agree with me that I’m right on this one.

Ingredients to MAKE Butterscotch pie
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3 eggs
- 2 cups of milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 unbaked pie shell
- Whipped topping (homemade is best)
HOW TO MAKE Butterscotch custard pie
Begin by preheating your oven to 450 degrees.
Once done, beat together the eggs and then add in your sugar, milk, salt, heavy cream, and nutmeg. When it’s all combined, take and pour into an unbaked 9-inch pie crust.
Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 325 degrees and place a cover over the outside crusts. You can use a metal pie crust shield for this.
After you’ve reduced the temp, bake the pie for another 30-40 minutes, until it’s set. You’ll know it’s done as you start to notice the custard bubbling in the middle of the pie.
Once the time has passed, remove the pie from the oven and let cool. Once cooled you then want to place it in the fridge for a few hours or possibly even let it rest overnight.

What toppings would go well with This Pie Recipe?
Since the pie has such a rich and creamy taste, you really don’t need a lot as a topping. I always like to add on a dollop of whipped cream or maybe even some shavings of chocolate, just to give it a little something else.

What is the purpose of adding cornstarch to homemade pie?
Great question. The added cornstarch is actually just a thinking agent for this recipe. If it wasn’t in it, there’s a good chance that the filling would be really runny and not ever really hold up its shape.

TIPS FOR BAKING Homemade butterscotch pie
This pie isn’t hard to make at all but there are a few things to keep in mind when preparing it.
- If you don’t add a metal covering to your crust when it’s in the oven, it will burn. You can easily purchase one offline to have it on hand for when you need it.
- If your custard isn’t setting up properly, you might need to give it more time in the fridge.
